A recent article (Child Obesity, August 2011), has shown that women who carry a significant amount of extra body weight early in their pregnancy are more likely to have children that are considerably overweight by the time the child is 4 years old. This study is one of a number that have now confirmed that there are critical periods for the development of excessive weight gain across the course of life. Studies like these confirm that women who are carrying extra body weight should place a high priority of losing some weight in preparation for pregnancy. If this is not possible, then minimising excessive weight gain for the remainder of the pregnancy should be undertaken. Making the commitment to lose the extra weight may set a far easier life path for your child.
