The low FODMAP diet has recently been created to help reduce the unpleasant symptoms of IBS. Finally, a clinical trial has just been completed that had aimed to determine whether this type of diet is actually effective for symptom control in IBS sufferers, when compared to IBS sufferers given standard healthy eating advice. The results were conclusive: participants on the low FODMAP diet reported significant improvements in bloating, abdominal pain and flatulence when compared to the control group ( J Hum Nutr Diet. 2011).
Adopting the low FODMAP diet should be the first and foremost management plan for any IBS sufferer.
