Probiotics as a Treatment for Constipation in Kids

by Dr Naras Lapsys

In adults, probiotics are frequently used to succesfully manage many gastro intestinal issues, including constipation. A recent pilot study (Nutrition Journal, Feb 2011) tested the effects of probiotics for the treatment of constipation in children. A group of children ranging from the ages of 3-16 were used in the study. The study’s results were very promising. Children taking probiotics went to the bathroom more often, with better stool consistency and reduced stomach pains. No side effects were reported at all. A larger trial is underway, but in the meanwhile, probiotic supplementation to your constipated child is certainly worth a try!
